How to get 800 on Digital SAT Reading & Writing
Reading & Writing is two modules of 27 in 32 minutes. The hard module is denser, more inference-and-evidence, and less forgiving of 'this choice seems true.' An 800 is still a routing problem: miss the Module 1 gate and you never see it.
Route first
The RW gate is roughly 18/27 on Module 1. That is a higher fraction than Math's ~15/22, which means you cannot shrug off Boundaries and Transitions as filler. Conventions and transitions should be close to automatic so the Information-and-Ideas items have time.
Stay inside the text
Most 700+ RW misses are not vocabulary. They are a choice that is true in the world, or true in a sentence, but not licensed by the stem. Inference answers should feel small. Evidence answers should still work if you deleted the rest of the blurb.
Treat synthesis as a checklist
Rhetorical Synthesis looks like a writing task. It is a constraints task. The goal in the stem is law. A beautiful sentence that drops one requirement is wrong.
What to drill by domain
- Information and Ideas — main idea vs detail vs inference
- Craft and Structure — substitute the word, name the sentence's job
- Expression of Ideas — goal checklist, then transition logic
- Standard English Conventions — count clauses, then cross out junk and check agreement
Questions
- Is RW 800 harder than Math 800?
- Different. RW has more items (54 vs 44) and less time per item. There is no Desmos escape hatch. The students who 800 it treat conventions as free and spend the extra seconds on evidence and inference.
- Should I read the whole passage first?
- These are short blurbs, not old long passages. Read the blurb, then the stem. Do not answer from the topic sentence alone when the turn is in sentence three.
