Nonlinear functions
Nonlinear functions are vertices, intercepts, transformations, and 'what does k do to this graph.' The algebra is secondary to reading the form.
What Bluebook is testing
P.C. is quadratic, exponential, and other nonlinear f(x): vertex form, growth/decay, composition, and interpreting parameters.
How it shows up
A graph plus a form you have to match, or a context (bacteria, money, projectiles) that is really vertex / intercept / rate.
A method that survives Module 2
Name the form: vertex, standard, factored. Each makes a different feature free. For transformations, change one thing at a time and check a point. Desmos: type the family with a slider for k if you need to see what k does.
Traps that look like knowledge
- Reading vertex form f(x) = a(x − h)² + k and flipping the sign on h
- Mixing growth factor (multiply) with growth amount (add)
- Answering f(2) when they asked for the x that makes f(x) = 2
- Treating a vertical shift as a horizontal one
