Equivalent expressions
Equivalent expressions is structure: factor, expand, rewrite. Band 6–7 versions look like a mess until you see the common factor or the (a + b)² hiding in it.
What Bluebook is testing
P.A. is rewriting polynomials and rational expressions so they match another form — factoring, distributing, combining like terms, difference of squares.
How it shows up
Advanced Math is the other 35%. These items are often MCQ 'which is equivalent' — four algebraically dressed versions of the same thing, plus one that dropped a sign.
A method that survives Module 2
Pick a number for x and evaluate the original and each choice. Desmos table works. If the structure is a square or a difference of squares, name it before you grind. Do not cancel across addition. Factor first.
Traps that look like knowledge
- Expanding (x + a)(x + b) and writing 2ab instead of a + b for the linear term
- Canceling a factor that is not common to every term
- Forgetting the 2ab in (a + b)²
- Matching a factored form that is equivalent only for some x (division by zero)
