Linear equations in two variables
Two-variable linear equations are the Desmos skill. The late-stage version is not graphing y = 2x + 1. It is reading which intercept, which variable, and which form the question actually wants.
What Bluebook is testing
H.C. covers ax + by = c, slope-intercept, and graphs of a single line. You are tested on intercepts, slope from standard form, and rewriting.
How it shows up
Often paired with a graph or a context (tickets, mixtures). Hard items ask for the intercept of a rewritten form, or the slope when A, B, C are parameters.
A method that survives Module 2
If Desmos is legal, type the equation as-is and read the intercepts off the graph. If you stay algebraic, solve for y first so slope and intercept are visible. Circle the requested quantity in the stem before you leave the item.
Traps that look like knowledge
- Reporting the x-intercept when they asked for y, or vice versa
- Leaving the equation in standard form and reading −A/B as the intercept
- Forgetting that ax + by = c has slope −a/b
- Answering a point on the line that is not the intercept they asked for
